La Primitiva Historical Changes

The La Primitiva lottery is Spain’s first official lottery game and one of the oldest European lotteries still operating. It was introduced in the 18th century by Spanish King Carlos III as the “Royal Lottery” to raise funds for hospitals, hospices and other public charities.

On the 10th of December 1763, it held its first draw as “Lotería por Números” or Lottery by Numbers and was abolished in 1862. It was reestablished more than a century later in August 1985 by the Organismo Nacional de Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (ONLAE).

55% of the revenue generated from the Spanish lottery bets sales is channelled towards prizes. The rest is contributed to state programs and charities, such as the Red Cross and the Spanish Association Against Cancer.
